Well in the situation of my friend it's a dilemma honestly and I must say both of you are right in a way but the fact is when you have a kid who think at 5 years old he is a girl it's almsot impossible to change it and there is absolutely no way to change this.
The only result you can get is to make a war with the person you have to love the most. I know some people who did it and at the end they regret their decision until they die without their son change in any part. So it was useless and just a toxic idea.
It's not about be a parent and show any authority it's about preserve the harmony in your family. As a father myself and 100 % hetero it's obvious I don't wish to have any of my children homosexual but if any of them was ( for the adult ones ) or will be ( for my youngest ones ) I aways said to myself I will have to simply accept it and love them the same whatever could be their libido.
I think every soul has to find the love of his/her life and what is important is happiness and nothing else.

Obviously yes it's important as parents to always do your best to help your kids in their growing up process but when there are some delicat subject like changing sex then situation are extremely difficult to set up properly !!!
