What you have, is a larger state, wanting to exert it's will on a smaller one. Fundementally speaking, it's really not all that much more complicated than that. Of course, there's plenty of good reasons why Russia is now after Ukraine specifically, but Russia has never made it any less obvious that it intends to do the same to other smaller states that are not aligned with NATO.
