Wow, I'm surprise of you post MightyMonkey because you and me are not always on same point of view, but yes you tell it as it is !!!

i think you simply misquoted what the guy wanted to say,
by threatening you understood menacing while he probably wanted to say

this guy probably speaks english as "well" as you do so there is a lot of place for interpretation for what is being said.
