Democracy is the power of the people, or of the people! And power, in its modern manifestation, cannot be with the people. There are regimes that masquerade as democracies, that use mechanisms of power, which they call democratic, but this is all deception and manipulation. In supposedly "democratic" countries, power is in the hands of the oligarchy, the financial-industrial magnates, the trans-national corporations. And all elections are simply political technologies to legitimize power and manipulate public opinion. It is like laundering "dirty" money. And there are no independent courts anywhere. Judges are people, which means they are dependent on the authorities.
Even in ancient Greece, which is considered the ancestor of democracy, only free and wealthy citizens (demos), but not slaves (ochlos), had all rights.
