hi,
i realize i'm a newbie, but the download speed is appalling: it fluctuates wildly and is on average 10k/sec (at 0100 hrs CEST). my speed test shows the usual 638k/sec.
what am i missing here?

I don't know but I suppose your connection is responsable because I just make a test now ( see capture screen below ) from my hotel in Czech Republic with a wireless connection which is not the best for this, and I get between 200 and 250 K/s.
