Ransomware

Post by david3451 »

I clicked a link on Eurobabeindex forum and my windows tablet browser was locked down. I had to delete all personal files and return to factory settings. A phone number was offered for me to pay ransom. Be careful!

And the moral of this story is get a decent antivirus and keep it updated. Even on tablets and phones.

Also worth using NoScript or similar to stop java on sites you don't know.

I have a Macintosh, I go at least 50 times a day on EBI since 7 years and I never got that kind of problem ...

ransomwares are very 'popular' at the moment

AntiVirus's are mostly unefficients

Mac OS could be affected (even if it's rare)

my advice : choose trusted sources for your softwares and do not open ZIPs received by Email

Yes I had disabled the security updates on the tablet.
Concerning the Mac OS, I just read (I think on the Business Insider website) that the ransomware thieves are starting to target it.

Hence my suggestion to get a 'decent' antivirus. You get what you pay for.

I think I was not precise enough ... I do not mean we can do without a good antivirus ... On the contrary!
But in the case of these new threats, it is helpful to be a little paranoid.

For example, last week I received various .ZIP files containing .JS files
I scanned these files with 3 antivirus, paid and updated (AVG, Symantec, Macafee) ...
These 3 ones told me that everything was healthy !!!
This week, after updates, they found "Locky" in the same files

=> BE CAREFUL TO THE TRANSMISSION BITTORRENT SOFTWARE.

This software is a very popular Linux / MAC OSX bittorrent tool, and it have been hacked on the official download website.
The Mac ransomeware is a Linux patched version, so it's also exists for Linux.

For Linux user, the famous Mint Linux website has been hacked recently, and the download of Linux on their website was corrupted.

Against Ransomware, always backup your data offline
=> USB Key, External HDD, and unplug them from your computer.
Be carefull, most of cloud storage (Google Drive, One Drive, etc) won't be secure enought to protect you against Ransomware.
