There was a recent survey that came out, and it matches a survey that was made in 2013.
Of all the tourists visiting Europe, Americans were the worst.
The survey cited who were most likely to urinate in the pool, steal items from the hotel, and skip out without paying the bill.
So if we Americans are treated rudely by the natives, we have only ourselves to blame.

If your sister and niece look like these 2 ladies, I understand people were friendly with them.

They did tell me that meals at restaurants are very expensive. Many times they ordered one meal and shared it. The restaurants did not seem to mind. My niece learned French in college as did I. So they had no problem getting around the city.
