I am not an expert, but I did hear some stories about American produced videos.
The producers picked ordinary looking, unattractive men for one of two reasons.

Some men are jealous of young well built handsome men having sex with a beautiful woman. If the man in the video looks like the viewer, the viewer can relate to him and fantasize that he is in the video.

Some men with a lot of money will invest in making the video. As a reward, they get to be in the video. Some are cheaply made, with out much makeup. I remember a video where the man's ass was covered with pimples. It was gross.

It might be that the makeup artist refused to work on his fat ass.

The male's looks and age has nothing to do with anything in a porn scene. It's all about the males talent's chemistry with the female model, it's about a good fuck scene, with the girls going further and expressing more for the camera. Preferable she should relax, have fun and lose control and be sexually dominated.

Now yes but in the 80s, 90s, and 2000s there was many men you would not expect to be making porn.
