If you had to list one era (say, 1-3 year period) when porn was at its best, when would that be, and why?

In my opinion, we are reaching a nadir: Putin's closing of Russia to porn combined with the effects of pirating makes this porn's worst era since at least the mid-90s. PW, however, is doing much better than the competition, and is continuing to uncover a lot of talent. The problem is that a lot of PW's discoveries are one-and-done. Not to mention that the rest of the industry is churning out sub-par talent with a lot of gimmickry.

2014 finds us in porn's dark ages. When was its golden age?

Golden age for producers was from 1972 till 1998 !!! For viewers, I don't know because time are changing and taste also. For me as a viewer, I will said 1978 till 1982 and then 1992 till 2002. But now even if there are beautiful girls when I see a company shoot 80 videos of Lucianna Karel with the same spirit, which is just to flood the web and feed the tubes of this company owner, then I think really golden age taste more and more like middle-age ...
I feel a bit like the little Asterix, the last to fight against the system but for sure one day I will have to give because unfortunately the porn lovers in 2014 are more masochist than clever !!!
No one understand than if we have stopped big production movies because there was no anymore rentability, then it will be same one day with the simple scenes.
The girls was getting paid 3 times more in 1998 for a sex scene than today and already many girls start to tell they prefer to stay in their regular job than come to porn considering the level of risk it brings and the few amount they get in return ...
So the future of porn is really in danger and when the tipping point will be reached I will be relax on the sand of a beach somewhere and will remember that I have had the chance to know the "Golden age of porn" !!!

Let me explain as a customer with view on the german market:
The golden age beguns when pornographic material was legalised 1975 in West-Germany.
Former you had to go to Denmerk and Sweden.
From 1975 onwards many (but not too many) film companies are established producing films on 16mm for the so called "blue-cinemas". "PAM"-Cinemas in Germany. One of the first companies -RIBU-Film" from Hamburg/Germany had an "golden" idea.
Ribu-Film - named of the founder Werner RItterBUsch- devided
Ribus 75min.for Cinema produced productions into 4 parts. Every Part was then sold for the home-cinema-market on 4 rolls- each filmroll had 120meters. The earning of that was amazing. 1 production - 2 x money! Mr.Ritterbusch was THE man with golden balls.
I had also to mention Mr. Alan Vydra.
With his "Alan Vydra Studios"situated in Hamburg, he produced exclusivly for the "Beate Uhse Company"
in Flensburg. He produced not only movies he also made the dubbing of them for the german market. He was one of the first who produced abroad in USA/San Francisco
with the young John Leslie and Annette Haven.
And not to forget, he was the first who used the upcomming "Dolby-Stereo" for dubbing. His "Girls,Girls,Girls"-Movie was the first HC-Movie in 4 channel Dolby-stereo-sound.
To bring that innovation to the audience, all Cinemas belonging to the Beate-Uhse-Group were fittet to dolby-stereo and on 27th Dec.1978 ready to start.
I think the real golden age of pornographic was over when "Video" was starting!
Everyone could make his own hc-movie, it was cheap, you need not too much technical brain- compared with 16or35mm Arri-cameras.

like Pierre said everyone has another opinion when the golden age of porn was. it also depends on the Producer. with pierre material I enjoy most the early 1990 with young russian girls until about 2000.
Yet with abbywinters it was from 2000 to 2007. now they also find it hard to get hot girls. many of the ones shooted today wold have not been taken in 2000 at abbywinters.

There was a time in history, when prostitution was so widespread because of proverty and hunger, that the purveyors of quality "adult entertainment" had difficulty differentiating themselves. They needed to be recognized as special quality, different from all the other common houses of ill repute, and thus be able to charge better rates. Thus the "gentlemen's club" was borne.

Today, the market for "free" entertainment has reached it's zenith, it is rampant, and consumers are going at it like there is no tomorrow. The general public either do not realize or do not care that they are in fact killing the supply side of the market. Who really wants to produce quality products, so that someone else can take it and make money for themselves without compensating the producer? So, the producers of quality "adult entertainment" will either retreat, retire or find a way to keep doing what they love to do and earn a living.

Where will the industry go from here? I see many possibilities, because the ill that comes with the internet's reach, also comes with good features and benefits. Perhaps another form "gentlemen's club". Artists will always have patrons, and entrepreneur artists will always organize their patrons into a profitable venture.

Personally, I will always support "the arts", because life would be so dull without some entertainment, like beautiful adult video performers, feeding our voyeuristic appetites. The next 10 years will be very interesting indeed.

One thing about Golden Ages, they always come back after a period of time.
