Well, there are actual supermodels who aren't all that pretty to me. Kate Moss comes to my mind for example. It's a matter of opinion of course. But it's beside the point because thanks to porn she can't do mainstream modeling now. Not in the US (in Europe you have exceptions of course, like Alice Marshall).

There is major competition between performers in the porn industry and the number of performers is quite small. Just imagine how much competition there is in the modeling world? It makes the problems of porn performers pale in comparison.

^^^^ Yeah, that's something I wanted to say as well but didn't find the words: poise, confidence, and a kind of photogenic quality that is different from porn. Not to mention that, as you point out, there's more competition, therefore it has to be a more cutthroat environment, and good contacts a must.
