BERLIN, Germany — Detectives launched a Europe-wide manhunt Wednesday for a Tunisian man who officials say is a suspect in the deadly terrorist truck attack on a Christmas market in Berlin.

Two U.S.intelligence officials confirmed to NBC News that the Germans are seeking the man in connection with the attack, a day after the first suspect was released without charge.

The Tunisian man is being sought in Germany and across Europe's border-free travel zone, Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said after briefing Parliament's domestic affairs committee.

Twelve people were killed and 48 wounded when the stolen 27.5-ton truck smashed into wooden huts serving mulled wine and sausages in the capital's Breitscheidplatz on Monday night.

The city's police department posted on Twitter that "508 leads regarding [the attack] were received by our colleagues answering the tip-line … thank you."

There were signs of a struggle in the truck's cab and traces of the suspect's DNA were found, regional state broadcaster RBB reported, saying officers searched local hospitals in case the culprit had sought medical treatment. A second arrest was made overnight but that suspect was also released, it added.

Meanwhile, Der Spiegel reported that an identity document belonging to a Tunisian man was found in the cab and that a police operation was underway in the region of North Rhine Westphalia.

None of those reports could immediately be verified by NBC News.

"WE MUST NOT BE AFRAID"
Authorities sought to calm nervous Germans who find themselves in the midst of manhunt during the traditionally busy final shopping days before Christmas.

"We must not be afraid," Berlin Mayor Michael Müller told ZDF early Wednesday. "It would be fatal now if we locked ourselves up at home and did not go out. It is right that we remind people that we have a tense situation and that people must remain vigilant."

Most of the approximately 60 Christmas markets in Berlin were expected to re-open Wednesday, although Breitscheidplatz remained closed off by forensic teams.

Police in Cologne expressed fear of copycat attacks and implemented extra armed patrols but said closing Christmas markets was not an option.

Andre Schulz, national chairman of the Federation of German Detectives, expressed optimism that the investigation would be quick.

"I am relatively confident that we will perhaps [Wednesday] or in the near future be able to present a new suspect," he told a discussion panel on ZDF.

Authorities on Tuesday released a 23-year-old Pakistani migrant, identified only as "Naved B.," who had been taken into custody Monday night.

Reports that a brave witness chased the suspect from the truck turned out to be untrue, Die Welt reported Wednesday, adding that the Pakistani was arrested "on the basis of vague descriptions."

His cellphone "did not contain any evidence of links to terrorist groups and the asylum-seeker vehemently denied the accusations — untypical for a radical religious extremist," Focus magazine reported.

The person responsible could now be hiding be among an estimated 500 known Islamist sympathizers living in Berlin, the magazine said.

Officials have yet to find a pistol that is believed to have been used to kill the first of the 12 victims — a Polish truck driver who was supposed to be delivering steel beams.

The driver, identified by his boss in media interviews as 37-year-old father-of-one Lukasz U., may have fought the suspect even as the attack unfolded, according to reports. "There must have been a fight," an anonymous investigator told Bild.

Among the injured was Inaki Ellakuria, who underwent surgery for a broken tibia and fibula on his left leg. He said he knew immediately it was no accident.

"It came fast, too fast to be driving off the road accidentally," the 21-year-old student from Spain tweeted only minutes after the attack. "It has swept me and ran over both of my legs."

The media arm of ISIS issued a statement claiming the attack was done in its name, although it gave no evidence and did not identify the attacker, according to analysts Flashpoint Intelligence.

Germany is not involved in anti-ISIS combat operations but has fighter jets and a refueling plane stationed in Turkey in support of the U.S.-led coalition fighting militants in Syria, as well as a frigate protecting a French aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean, among other assets.

Like Klaus Müller said the chances are high that humankind will destroy itself in this century, either through war, epedemy, or starvation or a combination of them. US-Israel elites are trying to push Europe to war with Russia and then Europe will be a destroyed battlefield. On the other Hand, we will be islamized in a few hundret years anyway. The bad thing is, like Pierre rightly stated, people in Austria and other european countries still vote for the Volksverräter.

Of course you are alive my friend, you have to complete all the updates !

I agree with all your statements. One fact that most of the "Gutmenschen" (people who believe in the positive consequences, who don`t see any danger, any problems) do ignore: in which Germany / Europe live our children in 15-20 years?

It´s all a nightmare. Good that we have here together with Pierre a small island to escape, to close the door and to enjoy little happiness.

These 'Gutmenschen' are like communists. They still preach their ideology even though everyone can see that its not working. They are the same kind of fundamentalist and they will resort to the same measures: take money from tax payers and spend it on their ideology projects. Merkel invited 2 Million muslim migrants on the cost of ordinary german tax payers! They don't have Gulags yet but their ideology is responsible for death of thousands of europeans who are are killed by migrants every year! Sometimes I hear that a politican resignes because he accepted a watch or another gift by someone. But I haven't heard that a politican has taken responsiblity for the killed, robbed, or raped europeans! You can only see them at social gatherings with migrants preaching their multikulti-agenda. In fact, Merkel (the woman who was secretary for agitation and propaganda under east-german communist youth federation) stated two months ago that she wasn't regretting her decison to let 2millions enter Germany in 2015.

Can somebody tell this woman that she was elected by Germans to serve the german Volk and not the interests of muslim migrants?!

It is disturbing to note that fighting-age young men dominate “refugee” flow to Europe.
This is in direct contrast to the canadian policy for example where only families with children are accepted.

Also people from Tunisia, Syria and Iraq are known to be baathists.

Just read this morning that Miss Merkel has accepted official way 1,2 Millions people refugies and 78 % are just men alone. The number of illegal is supposed to be between 300 000 and 1 million. Less than 5000 have already found a job.
If all this is exact, good luck for our future ...

Even in germany, there is a huge discussion in the population, why Merkel allowed to shoot all this so called Selfies with illegal Immigrants? She visitited their camp and didn´t disagree, to shoot all this selfies. But in Syria and north of Africa, this pictures were recognised as invitations. And in the beginning, german media and even labour-market-specialist told german public, these people are well educated, they are scientists and employees for medical staff. Today we know, they are not! Most of them cannot write or read anyting, and on top of that, they feel not treatet well by their guest-conutries like France or Germany. They want to make things clear: We do not speak your language, we do not have any education, but we want good paid jobs, we want your style of living, we want your women and so on ...
I´m very curious about the elections in France and the Netherlands and in german sub-unit North-Rhine-Westfalia in 2017, and in Germany in common too.
