How has the Corona lockdown affected the porn business?

Post by nyhanare »

How has the Corona lockdown of society with closed borders, affected the European porn business, where Budapest and Prague were the "porn capitals" of a pretty much, integrated Europe?

I find it difficult to ever see a return to normalcy after they now have shut down half of the society and we are facing economic depression, over a glorified virus, that in my country (Sweden) yet have killed 0,01% of the population? It's not exactly like the Spanish flu.

I personally feel depressed like the author Stefan Zweig who when the world was crashing down around him during World War 2, wrote in The Europe of Yesterday:
"Before 1914 the earth had belonged to all. People went where they wished and stayed as long as they pleased. There were no permits, no visas, and it always gives me pleasure to astonish the young by telling them that before 1914 I travelled from Europe to India and to America without passport and without ever having seen one. One embarked and alighted without questioning or being questioned, one did not have to fill out a single one of the many papers which are required today. The frontiers which, with their customs officers, police and militia, have become wire barriers thanks to the pathological suspicion of everybody against everybody else, were nothing by symbolic lines which one crossed with as little thought as one crosses the Meridian of Greenwich. Nationalism emerged to agitate the world only after the war, and the first visible phenomenon which this intellectual epidemic of our century bought about was xenophobia; morbid dislike of the foreigner, or at least fear of the foreigner. The world was on the defensive against strangers, everywhere they got short shrift. The humiliations which once had been devised with criminals alone in mind now were imposed upon the traveller, before and during every journey. There had to be photographs from right and left, in profile and full face, one's hair had to be cropped sufficiently to make the ears visible; fingerprints were taken, at first only the thumb but later all ten fingers; furthermore, certificates of health, of vaccination, police certificates of good standing, had to be shown; letters of recommendation were required, invitations to visit a country had to be produced; they asked for the addresses of relatives, for moral and financial guarantees, questionnaires, and forms in triplicate and quadruplicate needed to be filled out, and if only one of this sheaf of papers was missing one was lost."
Before 1914 Europe (and the Western world) were more integrated than it ever was during the EU. There were no border controls, and of course you didn't need a passport. Economically most parts were integrated through the gold standard.

Like the Nobel prize winner F.A. Hayek pointed out in The Road To Serfdom (written 1940-43), when a Police state is established, it is pretty hard to roll back.

"Nothing is so permanent as a temporary government program", as Milton Friedman said.

Totally wrong. The Openness index (economic metric calculated as the ratio of country's total trade) of West Europe was 14% in 1914 (just before the war started) VS more than 30% today.

Economically most parts were integrated through the gold standard but after 1945 this role was played by the Dollar (even when Nixon decided to stop the convertibility with gold).

Google it, there is many academic sources.
The route to serfdom was written in 1944. If you refer to this book, of course you will see that Europe was less integrated than in 1914 but many things changed since this time.
It is also the common sense. Most of the countries in Europe are member of the Single European market (means no barrier) incl. countries out of EU (Norway, Switzerland etc..) and we have more countries than in 1914 (new countries from the former Yugoslavian) or countries which split (like Austro-Hungarian empire).

Why don't you google it yourself? According to mainstream history (and even non-mainstream historians like Paul Johnson, Ralph Raico etc) the world were more globalized, and we had more free trade, open borders and freedom of movement before 1914.

For example, where I live, in the Greater Copenhagen (Scania/Sealand) metropolitan area, parents sent their children across the border to education in Danish schools, and it was common for Scanian newspapers to write reviews of theaters and operas in Copenhagen etc, before 1914. But not after.

The Scandinavian Monetary Union with the gold standard, that economically integrated Scandinavia was also abandoned against the popular will in 1914.

And Mölle, close to where I grew up, was a German and Danish - rather than Swedish - tourist resort, before the fateful year of 1914.

Hej Nyhanare,

I think this picture is clear. The level of "globalization" Of 1914 was only recover in the beginning of the 1970's.

Only few parents "sent their children across the border to education in Danish schools". Most of them are Expats, the international school in Copenhagen (Denmark) have a better reputation than the one in Scania (Sweden). Another reason is the high percentage of non-European immigrants in Malmø.

Only few people in Scania can afford to go to Copenhagen to see operas. Malmø (the biggest city of Scania which is very close to Copenhagen) is an industrial city, the shipyard's workers couldn't afford for such activities (and even they could they would prefer to drink a good beer than listening Hamlet declaring one's love to Ophelia).

The Scandinavian Monetary Union because was abandoned because of balance payment deficits of Denmark and Norway.

In the latter part of the 19th century Mölle was renowned as a center for erotic entertainment, especially mixed sex bathing (considered marginally scandalous in that era); thus it attracted visitors from throughout Sweden as well as various parts of Europe. There was even a weekly train from Berlin to Mölle up until the First World War.

Zweig commited suicide because he believed that the germans will win the ww2, he lost his faith in humanity, wich is disapointing for a "humanist" who breaked ours balls all his life with "poetry and hope", also his oldness made him embittered, Corona lockdown will not stay and the worldwide economy will have better period.

@Booz: Bravo
